How to Get Rid of Upper Lip Wrinkles

Our lips are exposed to many different substances, pollution, toxins and pathogens. In fact, many infectious diseases enter the body via the mouth, whether through eating, drinking or breathing. Cigarette smoke also exposes our lips to toxic substances. All these contaminants affect the condition of the skin around our mouths, and upper lip wrinkles begin to form over time.

The skin in the lip area is as delicate as skin on the neck or around the eyes because lip skin is very thin; and it even becomes thinner due to a natural decrease in the production of collagen that occurs gradually as we age.

Why You're Losing Your Defenses Against Wrinkles

Collagen is one of the skinís building blocks that plumps up and fills in the creases and valleys of our skin, making lip wrinkles less visible. Collagen is damaged and destroyed by free radicals that we are constantly exposed to in the air we breathe.

Our lips are also protected from the elements by natural balm, a moisturizing blend of natural oils and water. This natural balm is destroyed over time by exposure to the elements. The muscles in our faces start to sag, as does the skin around the mouth, which facilitates upper lip wrinkles. While plastic surgery can lift muscles and tighten the skin, it cannot restore the natural fullness enjoyed in our youth. This is why cosmetic facial surgery for upper lip wrinkles rarely looks natural.

Hygiene and Hydration

Good hygiene and care is just as important for our lips as it is for the rest of our skin. The first step in protecting your youthful appearance and preventing the development of upper lip wrinkles is to maintain adequate hydration for your skin. In other words, drink plenty of water, and use an oil free lip moisturizer.

Of course, moisturizer alone will not get rid of upper lip wrinkles. Apply a protective lip balm several times throughout the day to protect your lips and the skin around your mouth from the damaging effects of free radicals in the air; those of which can lead to wrinkles on lips. Personally, I always make sure I have a jar of petroleum jelly around when my lips start to get overly dry; it's cheap and it's very effective.

Products for Lip Wrinkles

Cream based retinol products are very effective at repairing upper lip wrinkles caused by chapped, dry skin and exposure to the elements. Products containing alpha hydroxy acids are useful for exfoliation of dead skin cells, and supporting the regeneration of collagen and newer skin cells.

Before using products containing retinol or alpha hydroxy acids, it is advisable to test your skin's sensitivity to these ingredients by applying the product elsewhere to a small patch of skin, and leaving it on overnight. If there is no sign of irritation in the morning, the product is safe to use on your skin.

If you're unsure about what wrinkle products are worth using and which ones are not -- AND you don't want to make any costly mistakes -- I suggest looking at our best wrinkle creams review page. There are several products that can reduce, if not eliminate, all types of wrinkles and signs of age.

Sun Exposure

Avoid overexposure to the sun if you want to reduce the appearance of upper lip wrinkles. Once the skin cells of you lips and around your mouth are damaged by the sun, problems with decreased production of collagen, thinner, dryer skin and the development of upper lip wrinkles will ultimately be the result.

Always wear a sunblock of SPF 15+ whenever you plan on spending time in the sun, and re-apply sunblock every 30 minutes to prevent sun damage. It may seem extreme to apply sunblock around your mouth all the time, but it's a small price to pay for getting rid of ugly upper lip wrinkles; not to mention a great way to protect yourself from them for the future.

Simple Lip Exercises

In conjunction with a good skin hygiene and the use of protective and moisturizing skin products, facial exercises are a non-invasive but effective method to get rid of lip wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of premature aging without any side effects!
